TOPIC: RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD
A parent refers to an adult who is related to a child through adoption, biological or in a foster level,who takes upon him/herself the responsibility of giving the necessary caring and inculcating moral values and principles,etc into the child.It also means a father or mother who provide security and protection to any child.
Parenthood simply means the state or status of being a parent.Therefore,the concept Responsible Parenthood refers to state or status of carrying out parental duties and functions in the family and society effectively and efficiently. lt involves parents being able to take care of their children and raise them to become good and responsible adults members of the society.
TYPES OF PARENTS
The following are the various types of parents.
1) Biological parent
2) Adoptive parent
3) Foster parent
4) Single parent
5)Step parent.
BIOLOGICAL PARENT
A biological parent is a man or woman who has a direct genetic relationship with the child.It also means blood relationship with the child.
ADOPTIVE PARENT
This is a man or woman who through legal means take voluntary responsibility for another person’s child/children and take the child as his/her own after fulfilling the necessary legal conditions.
FOSTER PARENT
This is a man or woman who nurtures or provides parental care to a child who is not related to him or her by blood or legal ties.
SINGLE PARENT(This might be a biological father, mother,adoptive or foster)
who takes care of the sole responsibility of nurturing the child and gives him/her all the parental care.
STEP PARENT
In this case either the father or mother of the child/children is remarried,then the new husband or wife becomes a step parent to child/children.
SKILLS OF GOOD PARENTING
Skills necessary for good parenting include the following:
1) Effective communication
2) Negotiation skills
3) Creative skills
4) lnter-personal skills
ROLES OF RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD
Responsible parents perform the following roles
1) providing for the household.
2)Caring
3) Education
4) Good home training
5) Recreation and Relaxation
6) Conflicts Resolution,etc.
