MEANING OF CONSONANT SOUNDS.

Consonant sounds are those speech sounds that are usually produced while the organs of speech experience contacts between themselves. Because the production of consonant sounds is done while the speech organs touch each other, there is usually a hindrance of free air-flow from the airstream during the production.

Examples of consonant sounds are – /f/, /v/, /q/, /đ /, /z/, /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, etc.

PRODUCTION OF CONSONANT CLUSTER.

Consonant cluster is a close occurrence of two or more consonant sounds in a word without an intervening vowel. This means that cluster of consonant is made up of two or more consonant sounds in a word that are not separated by a vowel sound (or without a vowel sound coming in between them).

NOTE :  while pronouncing a consonant cluster,  the consonant must follow in group and be pronounced as separate sounds by the sounds following the other, because in consonant cluster we consider sounds and not letters. For example : thatch – in “thatch”,  there is no cluster of consonant but in “ask”,  there is a cluster of consonant sounds.
