SS 2 BIOLOGY

Topic: Reproductive Systems In Vertebrates

Vertebrates are animals with back bone. There are five classes of Vertebrates; they are fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

In our lessons, we shall study the reproductive systems in fishes, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Reproductive System Of Fish

In fish, the sexes are separate but the males and the females look alike and are difficult to distinguish one from each other.

The reproductive system is found within the abdomen.

Male Reproductive System

The male reproductive system consists of two testes (singular–testis) suspended in the abdominal cavity. They are joined to the posterior of the body as a single duct which opens to the outside as a genital opening called cloaca.

Female Reproductive System

It consists of two ovaries and the oviducts (fallopian tubes). The ovaries produce eggs which are discharged into the body cavity and move gently into the oviducts. The oviducts open posteriorly into the genital openings (cloaca).

Assignment

Draw and label in your biology notebook, the male and the female reproductive systems of fish and lizard(reptile).

The Reproductive System Of Lizard (reptile)

Male Reproductive System Of Lizard

The male reproductive system of lizard consists of two tested,, vas deferens(sperm duct), epididymis and two protrusible penes called hemipenes.         The testes produce spermatozoa. They are connected to the epididymis where spermatozoa are temporarily after they are manufactured by the testis. The epididymis leads into the vas deferens (sperm duct). The vas deferens conducts spermatozoa from the epididymis to the protrusible penes which discharge sperm into the female.

The Female Reproductive System Of Lizard

The female reproductive system of lizard consists of two ovaries, fallopian tubes(oviducts) and the cloaca. The two ovaries are located in the lower abdomen. They release eggs into the cavity and are moved into the oviducts(fallopian tubes). The oviducts open at the posterior end into the cloaca near the opening of the ureter.

Assignment
