 Topic: Simple Equation

Date of Submission: Monday 11th May 2020

Introduction: Simple equation is a mathematical statement that two algebraic expressions are equal. The two quantities are connected with equality sign.

Simple equation can be solved by: (a) balancing method and (b)collecting like terms.

Example 1: Solve  5z + 6 = 26 by:

 (a) balancing method and;  (b) Collecting like terms

                  Solution

(a)    By balancing method:

        5z + 6 = 26

        Subtract 6 from both sides

        5z + 6 – 6 = 26 – 6

        5z = 20

        Divide both sides by 5

        z = 4

(b)   By collecting like terms:

      5z + 6 = 26

      collect like terms

      5z = 26 – 6

      5z = 20

      Divide both sides by 5

      z = 4
