TOPIC: CONTEMPORARY NIGERIAN ARTISTS

This is the artists that started in the middle of 20th century to the present 21st century. There are so many of them but we are just going to talk about few, according to the scheme.

Chief Aina Onabolu: was born in Ijebu Ode,Ogun state in 1882 and died in 1963. He started practicing art after his secondary education. He traveled to England and Paris to study art. There he got Diploma in Art Education and Painting. He is regarded as the father of art in Nigeria because he was the one who introduced the study of art into the Nigeria’s school curriculum. A traditional chief.

AKINOLA LASEKAN: He was born in Owo, Ondo state in 1916 and died in 1972. He started Practicing art at a tender age on his own and won many art competitions organized by government. He was an illustrator of bible stories. He traveled to England in 1945 for further studies in art. He is elected fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London. Some of his works are:

Market scene. Yoruba girl. Nigerian soldier. All at the gallery of Modern Art, Iganmu Lagos.
