AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE SS1 NOTE AND ASSIGNMENT

TOPIC :ROCK FORMATION

DEFINITION OF ROCK.
A rock is a hard compact mass made up of clusters of minerals.

TYPES OF ROCK. Rocks are grouped according to their mode of formation, appearance and mineral composition. Based on the above analysis, there are three major types of rock: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

(1)IGNEOUS ROCK. Mode of formation : igneous rocks are formed by the cooling and solidification of the molten magma ejected from beneath the earth crust. The magma is formed as a result of high temperature and pressure beneath the earth and forces itself towards the earth’s surface ,on coming in contact with the lower temperature out there ,cools solidifies to form igneos rock which is also known as primary rock
rock.

(2)SEDIMENTARY ROCKS. mode of formation : They are formed when pre-existing rocks are broken down by agents of denudation such as water, ice or wind. These sediments are carried and deposited elsewhere in layers or strata .The plane between two strata is called bedding plane.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SEDIMENTARY ROCK

(1)They occur in Layers

(2)They are coarse in texture

(3)They do not exist in Crystals.

(4)They contain fossils of plants and animals.

(5)The are soft.

ASSIGNMENT
(1)list three characteristics of
igneous rock.
(2)Discuss the types of igneos rock and give examples of each type mentioned.
(3)Mention and explain briefly the three types of sedimentary rocks and give examples.
